Postpartum Depression & Anxiety: You’re Not Alone
Bringing a new life into the world is often described as joyful, beautiful, and transformative. And while those things can be true, they’re not the only truth.
For many new parents, the postpartum period also brings exhaustion, overwhelm, intrusive thoughts, and isolation. If you’re feeling this way, you’re not failing—and you’re not alone.
At Catsam Wellness Therapy, I work with adults navigating all kinds of life transitions—including the emotional complexities of early parenthood. Whether you’re adjusting to identity shifts, managing relationship strain, or feeling unlike yourself, this post is here to offer insight and support.
What Is Postpartum Depression?
Postpartum depression (PPD) is more than just “baby blues.” While many new parents feel tearful, tired, or moody for a week or two after birth, PPD lingers longer and can significantly impact your ability to function and connect.
Signs of PPD may include:
Persistent sadness, hopelessness, or numbness
Difficulty bonding with your baby
Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy
Changes in appetite or sleep (beyond normal baby-related shifts)
Thoughts of harming yourself or feeling like your family would be better off without you
What Is Postpartum Anxiety?
Postpartum anxiety is also common—but less often talked about. It can exist on its own or alongside depression.
Signs of postpartum anxiety may include:
Constant worry, especially about your baby’s safety
Racing thoughts or feeling “on edge”
Difficulty sleeping, even when the baby is asleep
Physical symptoms like a racing heart, nausea, or tight chest
Feeling the need to control everything to avoid catastrophe
These symptoms are not character flaws. They are treatable mental health conditions, and help is available.
Why Therapy Helps
Therapy provides a space where you don’t have to keep it all together. You can name what’s really going on—without judgment.
At Catsam Wellness Therapy, I offer in-person therapy in York, PA for adults seeking to:
Navigate emotional overwhelm after childbirth
Reconnect with their sense of identity and self-worth
Learn tools to manage intrusive thoughts and anxious spirals
Set boundaries and ask for help without guilt
Process feelings of grief, loss, or disconnection in the parenting journey
My work is grounded in CBT-informed, relational therapy, which helps you understand the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while exploring your experience at a pace that feels safe.
You Deserve Support
You don’t have to “snap out of it.” You don’t need to suffer in silence. Parenthood is complex, and your mental health matters just as much as your baby’s well-being.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or emotionally depleted, therapy can help you reconnect with yourself and find steadier ground.
